DESCRIPTION

The PR-6615 is a small network appliance, that can monitor UDP/IP Ethernet traffic flowing through it. When a UDP packet matches a user-specified selection rule, the UDP packet is replicated and sent to one or more alternate destinations. This can be useful for a variety of applications, such as duplicating telemetry, video, or audio feeds, or for converting between multicast and unicast addressing.

The PR-6615 has four 1Gb Ethernet LAN ports. The ports are bridged, similar to an Ethernet switch. This allows the PR-6615 to be easily installed in the data-path between a data sender and a data receiver.

The PR-6615 may be configured with up to 20 selection criteria rules. The rules consist of source IP, destination IP, source port, and destination port. Matching a range of IP addresses and port numbers is also supported. When a selection rule is met, it can trigger replicating and sending the UDP packet to as many as 20 alternate destinations. The alternate destination may be to a different IP address and destination UDP port number.

The PR-6615 is configured and managed through a menu based web browser interface. The initial IP address may be configured via an RS232 serial port or by attaching a standard HDMI monitor and USB keyboard to the device.

How it works:

The Packet Repeater is used to duplicate some or all of the UDP packets passing through it. The original packet is passed unchanged; and if selected for duplication, it is duplicated and the duplicates sent to configured addresses. All UDP packets are candidates for duplication, which is selected based upon configured criteria. The selection of a packet to be duplicated may be based upon the any combination of the source IP address, the destination address, and the UDP port number. Additional flexibility is provided with the selection criteria which may include multiple address ranges for the source and destination as well as UDP port being selected.

Each packet selected by one of the selection rules may be duplicated to as many as twenty recipient IP addresses for each rule. A packet may be selected by more than one rule. UDP port numbers may be passed intact with no change to the destination port number, or a different UDP port number substituted for the original one.

Since the Packet Repeater is bidirectional, packets being returned through the Packet Repeater may be passed unchanged, or duplicated as well.

An alternative to the Netsieben netflow replicator. It also works great with Solarwinds network monitor systems.

All UDP packets are candidates for selection, so the Packet Repeater may be used to duplicate SNMP traps, SCADA protocols including DNP/UDP, and MODBUS/UDP, as well as all other UDP packets.

The PR is currently used to duplicate digital audio streams prior to broadcast on multiple transmitters, security video data streams for multiple SOCs, and power meter readings at company interconnection points.

Redundant SCADA polling hosts

When using SCADA protocols such as DNP or MODBUS over UDP/IP, it is sometimes advantageous to have the remote RTUs respond to multiple polling hosts. This provides a redundant host, possible off-site. Some RTUs only respond to a single polling host, as configured in the RTU. The Packet Repeater will allow multiple RTUs to interact with multiple polling host computers.

Redundant rsyslog logging to multiple rsyslog computers

It is sometimes needed to duplicate system logging entries on multiple systems, such as server rsyslog entries, firewall syslog entries, etc. This device allows a single rsyslog entry to be duplicated to multiple remote logging computers

Netflow or Sflow datagrams

The Packet Repeater allows sflow and netflow datagrams to be duplicated to multiple management workstations.

SNMP

The Packet Repeater allows SNMP traps to be duplicated to multiple SNMP workstations, RMONs, and allows a single SNMP client to be controlled from multiple workstations.

UDP

The Packet Repeater allows a single UDP protocol server to supply UDP packets to multiple recepients.

Streaming Audio and Streaming Video

The Packet Repeater allows a single streaming server to supply UDP streaming data flows to multiple receipients.

Multicast Unicast translation

The Packet Repeater allows a IP address "fan-out" from a single unicast IP address range to multiple addresses. The addresses on either the incoming or exiting port may be unicast or multicast IP address ranges.
